Lugo is one of the 4 provinces on the autonomous community of Galicia on the Northwestern part of Spain. Lugo is bounded on the north by the Cantabrian Sea, on the West to the province of A Coruña and Pontevedra, South to the province of Ourense and East by the province Asturias and León.
Lugo is the biggest province of Galicia but is the 3rd in inhabitants, having a population of 355.549 (INE 2008)
Lugo has the following comarcas (Spanish boroughs): Ancares, Chantada, Fonsagrada, Lugo, Mariña Central, Mariña Occidental, Mariña Oriental, Meira, Quiroga, Sarria, Terra Chá, Tierra de Lemos and Ulloa.
The Northern part of Lugo where the 3 Mariñas are located (Mariña Central, Mariña Occidenta) is characterized by having many cliffs of amazing shapes also called Rías, medieval castles and economic activities such as fishing and industry.
On the West of province of Lugo we find the capital, Lugo city
Bellow Lugo we find Ulloa, where you will find many typical Galician properties called Pazos, which are beautiful manor houses. The Eastern part of the province of Lugo (Fonsagrada and Ancares) is the mountainous region of Lugo, with high peaks dense forests and many traditional stone properties.
The Southern part of Lugo; Chantada, Tierra de Lemos and Quiroga, also called the Ribera Sacra Region, has many rivers and sloped terraced vineyards. |
