Águilas is a village and a municipality in the district of Alto Guadalentín, province of Murcia.
Águilas borders with the municipalities of Lorca and Pulpi and on the south to the Mediterranean sea.
Águilas has a population of 34900 inhabitants (2010) and is an important tourist destination for Europeans since it is located in famous Costa Cálida.
The coast of Águilas has over 30 beaches including: Playa de las Delicias, playa de Levante, La Colonia and playa de poninete.
Águilas has a very old history dating back to the Bastetanian civilization. The layout of the village as it is today was designed by King Charles III, and in 1834 it became an independent council.
Águilas has also a British heritage since during late XIX and the start of the XX century a big colony of British settled there and many old buildings are a reminder of that time such as the British cemetery and the Hornillo Pier.
The economy of Águilas is mainly dependent on tourism and agriculture.
Currently there are many luxurious properties being built and its is safe to buy a property in Águilas. Nevertheless, Águilas was also recently involved in a property scandal in La Zerrichera where they planned to built an golf course and a urbanization with luxury properties in a protected area.
